Joint innovation strategy and cooperation accelerates 5G development

PARIS, France – March 16, 2017 – LTE for IoT chipmaker Sequans Communications S.A. (NYSE: SQNS) announced the renewal of its 5G research partnership agreement with leading global smartphone manufacturer, TCL Communication. The agreement is an extension of an earlier agreement the two companies executed in March of 2015 whereby TCL Communication and Sequans agreed to jointly develop next generation 5G wireless technologies in order to accelerate their development. The collaboration of TCL Communication and Sequans has already yielded a number of important proposals to the future standard, based on innovation in key 5G areas such as wearables, smart use of unlicensed spectrum, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and 5G new radio.

“The development of the 5G standard is now moving ahead at full speed and our collaboration with TCL is yielding key technological advancements that will directly impact the connected world of the future and the Internet of Things,” said Georges Karam, Sequans CEO. “Our continuing partnership with TCL positions us to be leaders in 5G, in both enhanced broadband and massive IoT.”

“We are very pleased to continue our successful collaboration on 5G research with Sequans as a key partner,” said Alain Lejeune, SVP of TCL Communication and general manager of TCL’s Worldwide Mobile Division. “Sequans’ expertise combined with TCL Communication’s vast reach as a leader in the global smartphone industry puts us in a unique position to contribute significantly towards meeting 5G expectations and requirements.”

“We are working on the advanced technologies identified in the 5G framing exercises of the 3GPP, an organization to which we have been contributing for more than a decade,” said Karam. “Also through extending our collaboration with TCL, we aim to build a larger European consortium to address key challenges of 5G within the context of the 5G Infrastructure Association, an organization coordinating 5G research in Europe.”

Both TCL Communication and Sequans have recently opened R&D centers in Sophia Antipolis, the Cote d’Azur’s science and technology hub, putting the two R&D teams in close proximity and further streamlining the two companies’ successful 5G collaboration.
