Sequans collaborated with industry experts from Sierra Wireless, Ericsson, Altair Semiconductor, Sony, Virtuosys, AT&T, Verizon, Orange, KDDI, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, KT Softbank, Telkomsel, and SK Telecom to analyze coverage capability of LTE-M (eMTC) technology. With the goal of thoroughly understanding how much coverage LTE-M can provide, the group conducted a thorough link layer simulation and summarized the results in a new white paper available here:
Coverage-Analysis-of-LTE-CAT-M1-White-Paper
The key finding is that LTE-M (eMTC) delivers a coverage gain of more than 20 dB over legacy LTE technologies and this gain corresponds to a data rate of 1400 bps in the downlink and 250 bps in the uplink.
The analysis confirms that LTE-M is the best technology choice from among LPWA technologies for applications requiring higher data rates, low latency, full mobility and voice. For IoT applications where latency, mobility, and data speed requirements are less stringent, LTE-M is a strong LPWA solution, demonstrating the versatility of LTE-M to support a wide variety of IoT applications cost-effectively.
