SEQUANS AND NORTEL CONDUCT SUCCESSFUL INTEROPERABILITY TESTING OF SEQUANS’ WAVE-2 READY MOBILE WIMAX CHIPS

Sequans joins Nortel’s WiMAX Ecosystem

PARIS, France and CUPERTINO, Calif. ― June 20, 2007 — SEQUANS Communications, a leading supplier and developer of fixed and mobile WiMAX semiconductor solutions, and Nortel, a leading telecommunications solutions provider, have conducted successful interoperability testing of their MIMO-based WiMAX products. The two companies recently signed an agreement to collaborate on mobile WiMAX interoperability testing for the purpose of expanding Nortel’s WiMAX ecosystem.

The interoperability testing took place at Nortel’s R&D labs in Ottawa.  The two companies tested many functionalities of mobile WiMAX, including live over-the-air MIMO, a key requirement for WiMAX Forum Wave 2 certification.  To show how MIMO improves the throughput delivered by mobile WiMAX, MIMO throughput was compared to SISO throughput at several modulation schemes and showed a 60 percent improvement across the board.  The highest SISO throughput achieved was 17 Mbps—close to the theoretical maximum.

“Our initial testing with Nortel has yielded very positive results,” said Georges Karam, Sequans CEO.  “Our collaboration with Nortel is accelerating the availability of mobile WiMAX and the advanced features that differentiate WiMAX from other wireless technologies.”

“Nortel is building a complete WiMAX ecosystem that will support our delivery of end-to-end WiMAX solutions,” said Peter MacKinnon, chairman, LG-Nortel JV and GM, Nortel WiMAX and Wireless Mesh. “We are working with world-leading chip manufacturers to form the foundation for high performing WiMAX devices. These devices will work with Nortel’s WiMAX infrastructure to deliver true mobile broadband capabilities like video and VoIP.”

The WiMAX client devices used in the Nortel/Sequans interoperability testing are based on Sequans’ newest chip, the SQN1130 Mobile WiMAX Wave 2-ready chip.  The SQN1130 features full 2X2 MIMO and the industry’s highest throughput and lowest power consumption. Sequans’ SQN1130 chip delivers more than 30 Mbps throughput while drawing less than 280 mW of power in active mode and less than 10 mW in idle mode.
